Lake Report

A Great Place for Kids to Fish!  Lake Norman is a man-made lake, built by Duke Power in the early sixties for power generation. It is approximately 50 square miles in size, or 32,000 acres. It actually has over 500 miles of shoreline, and the depth averages about 30 feet. It is a great place for pleasure boating and  fishing,  stocked with largemouth and spotted bass, striped bass, catfish, and white bass.

Interested in learning about fishing Lake Norman? I recommend you ask my friend, Captain Gus Gustafson. He’s a USCG licensed captain, and an experienced Lake Norman guide. No one knows the lake better than Gus.  Gus teaches free seminars at the Gander Mountain store in Mooresville almost every month on various topics concerning fishing. Check his website for Events.

Interested in where you can launch your boat or what marinas are available for gas, service, or food? Here’s the place to find out: Lake Norman’s Web.

April 23, 2011:  The lake is about two feet below full pond, and that’s a pretty full lake. If you don’t think so, try to get your pontoon under some of the bridges with the bimini top up. Water temperatures at the surface are rising, currently in the 60°s. According to my good friend Captain Gus, the White Perch fishing is good, but you need to look in 15-30′ near creek arms to find the schools. Catfish are responding to fresh cut bait or stink baits. Gus says the docks are producing the biggest bass right now.
