Lake Report

A Great Place for Kids to Fish!  Lake Norman is a man-made lake, built by Duke Power in the early sixties for power generation. It is approximately 50 square miles in size, or 32,000 acres. It actually has over 500 miles of shoreline, and the depth averages about 30 feet. It is a great place for pleasure boating and  fishing,  stocked with largemouth and spotted bass, striped bass, catfish, and white bass.

Interested in learning about fishing Lake Norman? I recommend you ask my friend, Captain Gus Gustafson. He’s a USCG licensed captain, and an experienced Lake Norman guide. No one knows the lake better than Gus.  If you think that you can’t catch fish on Lake Norman when it’s hot, guess again. Want to learn how? Captain Gus is teaching a free seminar on striper fishing at the Gander Mountain store in Mooresville, Thursday, June 24th. He teaches free seminars at the store every month on various topics concerning fishing. Check his website for Events.

Interested in where you can launch your boat or what marinas are available for gas, service, or food? Here’s the place to find out: Lake Norman’s Web.

August 15:  The unusually hot summer as taken its toll on the striped bass in the lake. Reports estimate about 7,000 stripers dead from the heat. The warming of the lake water drives the fish deep seeking cooler, more oxygen-rich water. However, this year we have a wider mid-depth band of “thicker” water, due to decomposing matter such as leaves, etc., running deeper in the lake. The fish are being squeezed into a smaller and smaller area, and they are not getting the oxygen they need to survive. This is not the first time the lake has experienced this problem. We need the water to cool down pretty soon, to save the stripers that are left. The good news: the “dog days of summer’ are coming to an end soon.
