Not more than a few hours’ drive from the Lake Norman region of North Carolina, one can find beautiful mountain scenery, trout streams, and a completely different climate than down here in the piedmont. Piedmont is a French word that means “foothills.” Huntersville, Davidson, Mooresville and the surrounding communities are situated in the foothills of the Appallachain mountains.
While I like lake living, and Lake Norman is one of the best lakes to live near, taking in the western North Carolina mountains is always enjoyable. Believe it or not, there are actually towns and people and commerce happening up there! Not to mention the great trout fishing.
I had the opportunity to spend a weekend in the Waynseville area, during peak fall colors. The scenery was spectacular, and it was a great way to relax. I did a little flyfishing while there, getting the chance to use the 5 weight rod I built in my rod building shop. Even if you don’t fly fish, the western NC mountains are a great place to spend some time away. Go the first chance you get!
